*Call to Worship

One:..........Before we got up this morning and decided to come to church,

All:..........God was waiting for us, to welcome us with grace.

One:..........When we are unsure of what to do; when we falter before the next step,

All:..........we come to listen to God's voice, to learn from the One who teaches us all we ever need to know.

One:..........When we are surrounded by cruelty and injustice; when our fears cripple our souls,

All:..........God delivers us with steadfast love; we are set free to be God's sons and daughters.

Unison Prayer

Lift us up, O God,
as you lifted the bent-over woman in the synagogue.
Deliver us from a lifetime of looking pessimistically at the floor
as though we had no hope in you,
as though you cared nothing for us.

Lift us up above the scowls of the critics
and their loudly broadcasted pronouncements about the present and our future.

We choose to believe that even on the bleakest day
you hold our families, our jobs
and everything about our future in your hands
and we are reminded that you love us –
like the Good Shepherd that cares for the sheep,
like one who lifts an infant to the cheek,
like Jesus when he saw the helpless crowds reaching out

to touch him.

Hold our faces in your hands, O God.
Comfort us and help us to look beyond what we see today,
what we overheard yesterday,
and what we fear about tomorrow.

Lift us up, O God,
and give us the power to walk upright again.
Amen

Prayer of the People, please hand it to an usher during the Prayer Hymn.

PRAYER SONG....................#2215

Cares Chorus” Sing Twice

UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Jesus, healer and friend, so many people today are victims - bent
over and burdened with the stress of making ends meet. Forgive us when we get so caught up with looking after ourselves and our own needs that we fail to look at people with your eyes. You refused to ignore those on the edge of your society, women and outcasts, people whom others considered inferior and unclean. You made people a priority over rules and regulations and you graced their lives with healing and dignity. Forgive us when we fail to do likewise. Unbind us and straighten us out, precious Lord, so that the good news we proclaim boldly with our lips is joyfully visible through our caring and compassionate deeds. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
One:..........If anyone is in Christ , there is a new creation: everything

old has passed away see everything has become new! All

this is from God, to whom we have been reconciled through Christ and so - rejoice - for in Christ, we are forgiven, we are healed, we are renewed.

All:..........Thanks be to God!

The Cost of Unbending

That she was bent for eighteen years, not many cared.

Some wondered what her sin had been and others sneered.

Face to the ground she came to church all on her own.

No one shook hands and steadied her, she stood alone.

That she was bent for eighteen years, he really cared.

Jesus did a thing that ‘was not done’, this One they feared.

With gentle strength he straightened her, with a big smile.

He shamed the those who never went the second mile.

Some enemies were made that day by what Jesus dared.

There were a few who wept with joy; some women cheered.

His work was done yet not complete in that small town;

There was an hour that must be faced with a thorn crown.
