*Call to Celebration

One:..........There are varieties of gifts,

All:..........but the same Spirit who gives them.

One:..........There are varieties of services,

All:..........but the same Lord who is served.

One:..........There are varieties of activities,

All:..........but it is the same God who activates all of them

in everyone.

One:..........Each one is given a gift of the Spirit,

All:..........to build up the whole body and to proclaim

that “Jesus is Lord.”

Prayer Hymn....................#474

Precious Lord, Take My Hand”

Unison Prayer

The seas roar, the earth shakes,
buildings crumble, roofs topple and walls turn to dust.

Have mercy on the people of Haiti, O God.

Nations watch, alarms sound,
traffic halts, utilities stop, and news is hard to verify.

Give us compassion to weep with those who weep, O God.

People die, families mourn, mountains split,
infrastructure and superstructure alike are gone.

Make us swift to help and persistent to rebuild,
not just things and structures, but lives, O God:

Through Christ, the solid Rock. Amen.

Prayer of the People

The Lord’s Prayer....................#895

*Doxology....................#94

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise God, all creatures here below; Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise God, the source of all our gifts!

Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts!

Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

*Prayer of Dedication (in unison)

Receive and bless these gifts, O God, which we bring in response to the many gifts with which you have blessed us. As you graciously bestow these varying gifts upon us, so may we as graciously use them to serve others and to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ our Lord, in whose name we pray. Amen.

*Closing Hymn....................Tune: Nettleton 8.7.8.7 D

There Are Many Ways of Sharing

There are many ways of sharing,

But God's Spirit gives each one.
There are different ways of caring;

It's one Lord whose work is done.
God, whose gifts are overflowing,

May we hear you when you call;
Keep us serving, keep us growing

For the common good of all.

We've been baptized in the waters!

We've been given work to do.
When you call your sons and daughters,

You give gifts for serving you.
God, we join in celebration

Of the talents you impart.
Bless each baptized one's vocation;

Give each one a servant's heart.

All are blest by gifts you give us;

Some are set apart to lead.
Give us Jesus' love within us

As we care for those in need.
Give us faith to make decisions;

Give us joy to share your Word.
Give us unity and vision

As we serve your church and world.

*Litany of Call

One: A child once dreamed the Voice was calling his name .. .

Samuel’; Fisherman once heard the Voice when a young

man bid them follow;

And still the Voice beckons today . . . can you hear?

All: Here I am. Send me.

One: Moses protested vehemently as the Voice spoke at the burning bush; Mary stood amazed as the Voice proclaimed impending birth;

And still the Voice beckons today . . . can you hear?

All: Here I am. Send me.

One: Rosa Parks followed the Voice to the front of the bus;Martin Luther King, Jr. heard the Voice as the bullet shattered;

And still the Voice beckons today . . . can you hear?

All: Here I am. Send me.

One: The Voice beckons from humble places . . .

in the tears of hungry children,

in the cries of Haiti’s devastation,

in the pleas of those whose dreams have been

too long deferred;

And still the Voice beckons today . . . can you hear?

All: Here I am. Send me.

One: A timid believer pauses to listen to the Voice;

A struggling church hears the Voice and turns;

And still the Voice beckons today . . . can you hear?

All: Here I am. Send me.

PRAYER ANTHEM....................Chancel Choir

Precious Lord, Take My Hand” Arr. Roy Ringwald

UNISON PRAYER

God, our hearts are aching as we try to imagine what the daylight brought to our brothers and sisters in Haiti.
Heal the young eyes that have seen far too much on this day.
Heal the hearts of many who have lost friends, family and a way of life on this day.
Be with those who are missing
And those who are dying outside of the grasp of
Loving hands to hold them
Loving voices to soothe them.
Move us over here from empathy to action
From sympathy to substance
As we contemplate what can be done to help
Today and many days
Into a forever-changed future.
Amen.

A Reflection on the Choral Anthem

Precious Lord, Take My Hand” Arr. Roy Ringwald

to the honored memory of Martin Luther King, Jr.

On April 3, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr., flew to Memphis, Tennessee, in support of a strike for higher wages and better working conditions by black sanitary public works employees. That day he delivered his "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech, in which he talked about threats to his life. He said:

Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.

The next day, April 4, 1968, at 6:01 p.m., King was shot in the head while standing on the second floor balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, surrounded by friends and associates. As he lay dying, he spoke his last words to his friend and musician Ben Branch, who was to perform at the event King was scheduled to attend that night. King said, "Ben, make sure you play 'Take My Hand, Precious Lord' in the meeting tonight. Play it real pretty."

"Precious Lord, Take My Hand" was written by Thomas A. Dorsey in 1932 following the death of his wife in childbirth and their baby shortly thereafter. Of Dorsey's more than two hundred songs, "Precious Lord" is the best known and most sung.

King's funeral took place on April 9, 1968, at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the church where both King and his father had served as co-pastors. His good friend, singer Mahalia Jackson, sang "Precious Lord" at the funeral. Her performance was in the slow, emotionally expressive, quasi-recitative style that gives the singer the freedom to slide into and out of notes, add ornaments and grace notes, and extend note values according to the expression of the singer or the content of the text. Later that same day, Jackson sang the song again at a service held at Morehouse College in Atlanta, King's alma mater.

This morning, the Chancel Choir offers Ringwald’s arrangement in memory of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The 2010 Flower Chart is available on the bulletin board in the office hallway. You may sign-up to honor or remember a person(s) or special occasion. The flowers are $15 - simply remit through your regular offering envelope or a pew envelope.

The West Michigan Conference has had a long and deep relationship with the people of the Methodist Church of Haiti. Mission Teams that routinely travel to Haiti and have focused water projects, the Haiti Hot Lunch Program, Grace Children’s Hospital, helping build multiple schools & church buildings, centering around relationships and shared hope through Jesus Christ. The flood of images coming out of the devastating earthquake evokes such a deep emotional response from us that words are inadequate at this time. The magnitude of the devastation has altered the landscape of how we can respond for the immediate moment & near future. Presently, persons are asked not to travel to Haiti or ship anything to the site. But, we can help in the following ways: pray & pray more; give sacrificially through UMCOR & prepare Health Kits for quick distribution. We will receive an offering for the next few Sundays & invite you to prepare a kit(s). Instructions for Health Kits for Haiti are located on the table in the narthex. Please follow them precisely. Thanks for your caring!!
