Prayer Hymn #2200

O Lord, Hear My Prayer” Sing Twice

Unison Prayer

Holy God, the stories of the saints through all the ages come to us as a gift, for it is through them that we have learned the meaning of faith. We receive this gift with thanks and praise. We are grateful for their example, for showing us the way, for challenging us to continue to live faithful lives. Grant us perseverance when the race gets tough, courage when trials beset us and rest when we grow weary from the struggles of life. May Christ’s joy renew us as we fix our eyes on him. Amen.

WELCOME AND PARISH NOTES

*GATHERING WORDS

One: By faith, Abraham set off for a place he had never seen, following a God who can never fully be known.

All: By faith!

One: By faith, Jochebed hid baby Moses from the Egyptian soldiers, and then later, by faith, she placed him in a basket in the Nile River to save him.

All: By faith!

One: By faith, this baby drawn out of the water, Moses, led the people of Israel out of slavery and through the piled-up waters of the Red Sea.

All: By faith!

One: By faith, a young girl named Mary accepted the risk of the angel’s announcement and became the mother of Jesus, Son of the Living God!

All: By faith!

One: By faith, this Jesus, Jehovah is Salvation, Emmanuel, God with us, leads us from death to life to eternal life.

All: By faith, we are given grace for every challenge, faith to follow our God -- who can never be fully known -- into unknown places.

One: By faith!

All: By faith, we have grace to survive impossible challenges.

One: By faith!

All: By faith, God gives us strength and courage to lead others to safety.

One: By faith!

All: We are surrounded by a cloud of faithful witnesses, we are led by God and loved by God and BY FAITH we are able to meet any challenge that lies before us. BY FAITH!

The flowers on the Lord’s Table are given

by Margaret Benninger and Family

in loving memory of Bill Benninger.

The Flowers on the chancel are from the family

of John Hines who passed away on August 9.

His Memorial Service was held in our sanctuary on August 12.

Today, we will be tying Prayer Quilts for Janet Root and Hazel Jarvis. The Quilts will be available for your prayers and tying in the Fellowship Hall following both worship services. A reminder that Prayers & Squares is an outreach ministry that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand-tied quilt. The purpose of Prayers & Squares is not to make and distribute quilts, but to promote prayer through the use of quilts. Our motto is: "It's not about the quilt; it's all about the prayers." Each quilt is for someone in special need of our prayers.

We received word that a former, long-time member of our congregation, Dee Tyler, died on Thursday evening. His Memorial Service will be on Saturday, August 28 at 3:00 p.m. The family will be receiving guests beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Holland • 57 West Tenth Street • Holland, MI.
