A Service of Holy Communion A Great Thanksgiving for Christmas Eve
One:..........Bethlehem is a long way away, and Jesus was born a long time ago. But Jesus was born for us, Christ is here with us still. Jesus invites us to meet him at this table.
All:..........As Shepherds came to the stable to celebrate the birth of a Savior, we come to worship.
One:..........All who come in fear or in need, all who come in wonder or in hope, all who come in love and in joy, are welcome here.
All:..........As we come, we bring to the table symbols of our lives offered in thanks. Here is bread. Here is wine. Here are our gifts. As the Magi brought gifts to praise a new King, these are our gifts offered in adoration and praise.
One:..........On a night like tonight we have much to thank you for, Gifting God. We thank you for the Word made flesh among us, for the birth of Jesus Christ our Lord; for his coming as the least among the least, in poverty among the poor. In vulnerability and need you have placed your love at our disposal, becoming for us a living hope in the midst of our powerlessness, challenging the proud and overcoming the powers that oppress and enslave us. You dwelt among us in justice and truth, giving grace and peace. And so we join the angels’ song to the shepherds singing:
All:..........Singing: Glo - - - ria in excelsis Deo! Glo - - - ria in excelsis Deo!
One:..........As you, O God, shared your love and yourself with us in the person of Jesus so he shared himself with us in loving us and giving himself for us.
On that never-to-be-forgotten night, as Jesus sat at the table and broke bread with his friends, he said: 'Take and eat; this is my body which is broken for you. Remember me each time you do this.' In the breaking of the bread, God breaks into our world.
After they had eaten, Jesus took the cup, and said: 'Remember me as you drink from this, for it is my life, poured out for you - the beginning of a new relationship with God.' In the pouring of the cup, the Spirit is poured out on the church. Send the power of your Holy Spirit upon us that we may experience the presence of the Word-Made-Flesh - Jesus Christ. Breathe your Spirit in us that we may be one body with Christ - faithfully following and serving him, and awaiting with expectation the coming of your glorious realm. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer....................#895 Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
Sharing of the Bread and Cup
Prayer After Communion One:..........Glory to God in the highest heaven All:..........And on earth peace to all of goodwill. One:..........Infinite, intimate God,
in
this Eucharist we have celebrated your presence with us. |
